About Soccer in the Slums with Reuban and Anna

Rueban works with soccer coaches who have started soccer clubs in the outcast parts of Nairobi. These clubs use soccer to teach practical life skills like the value of God, the value of honest hard work, community, and the importance of teamwork. He also coaches varsity boys and girls soccer at a local international school where he gets to challenge and invest in the students there. Reuben also volunteers at a youth church that meets in the Mukuru Kwa Njenga Slums, the church has approximately 100 young boys and girls (ages 12-35) where he preaches on foundational Christian beliefs.

Anna teaches science, Bible, praise and worship, and student leadership at a local middle school. In this position, she has the incredible opportunity to share truth with her students. In Bible class, she teaches that the Bible is accessible - she demonstrates how to read the Old Testament by walking through it's stories and teachings with her class. In science, she shows the students that they don’t have to choose between science and the Bible. They can be good scientist who trust in the truth of God.

Together Rueben and Anna's dream is to focus their ministry on teens through teaching them practical life skills and through disciplining them to become life long followers of Jesus.

Meet the Leaders: Reuban and Anna

Rueben was born and raised in the Nairobi slums. This was where his parents could afford food, shelter, and clothing and sent them to public schools as the government had declared the beginning of free education. His parents also made sure he was connected to Kingdom Life Church.

When he was 18, he came into a personal relationship with Christ on April 14th. He grew up in Church but never understood the gospel until that day. He was assured by Christ that He was his success - Christ was all he needed.

Reuben also enjoyed playing soccer - soccer was a place of expression and dreaming for him. He spent a lot of time cooking with his 3 older sisters, and most of the time he would make better food than them! Cooking ended up being his career choice after graduating High School. Playing soccer became a tool he uses for ministry, and he realized he could use soccer and cooking to teach God's word to young people. God has been placing him in areas for him to use his love for cooking and soccer to minister to young people from all walks of life.

Anna, grew up as a pastor's kid and went to church multiple times a week. She went to a public school in a small farm town and her parents were very involved in her life growing up and built a strong Christian foundation.

After graduating from college with a degree in secondary education and Bible, Anna went to Bangladesh to teach, this was an American school with national, Muslim students attending. She was able to teach from a Christian curriculum to Muslim students. She remembers a moment that hit her where a song was playing, “every knee shall bow, every tongue confess, that Jesus Christ is Lord.” She remembers thinking, “it doesn’t matter if I tell these students or not, they will one day confess that Jesus Christ is Lord." The challenge to herself was, will they confess that Christ is Lord having a relationship with Him, or will they confess Christ is Lord knowing they will be separated from Him for eternity? I need to make sure they are at least informed of the decision and its real consequences while I have the opportunity.

This changed her whole perspective on how she wanted to live her life. Wherever God sent her, she wanted to make sure the people around her knew the truth on what will happen in eternity. After Bangladesh, Anna had another opportunity to teach at a school in Kenya. After being in Kenya for two years, she met Rueben and they were married.
