Broadcasting Faith to Families in Cyprus

Extended family is like immediate family. The Cyprus Christian Radio Ministry hears how listeners want to pass on faith to families.

Mediterranean culture thinks of extended family like immediate family. It’s at the center of social and spiritual life, with great influence on all generations. In Cyprus, the Christian Radio Ministry hears how fundamental family is to listeners when callers share about their desire to pass on faith to families.

A Husband Asking for His Wife

One man spends a lot of time in the car, commuting for work with his wife. Most Cypriots relate to this, since there is little public transportation. As this couple travels, they listen. He said, “Me and my wife, due to our work, spend most of our time in the car.  We are tuned only to your station because we like the programs so much.  We are listening from morning till night.” The heart of the husband has started to turn, and he’s concerned for his wife. His call to the station is not only for himself, but for his wife. “Could you please send me a New Testament in modern Greek for my wife?  I read the bible in ancient Greek, so now, I want my wife to start reading it in modern language in order for her to understand it.”

A Daughter Caring for Her father

One woman cares for her bed-ridden father who spent his life as a priest. They live in a village around Limassol. Two years ago, the daughter called the station to request what few Orthodox people uses – a New Testament. When she called, she said, “”My father is a priest, and it’s been years that we are listening to your station.  Now he is old and in bed, but we like to listen to your programs. Your station gives us strength and courage”!! This time, the daughter requests a DVD of the Jesus Film to watch with her aging father.

A Father Sharing With His Grown Children

An old man called the station to say thank you for the New Testament he received from them. He didn’t want to be like one of the 9 lepers, he said, so he called back to say thank you.  A few days later, he called again, saying, “My son and daughter saw the New Testament that you have sent me and asked where did you find this?  It’s in modern Greek so we can understand it.  Could you please send me two New Testaments for me to give them to them?  I will also ask some of my friends at the coffee shop, if anyone wants one, I will let you know so you can send them.”

A Mother Reading the Word to Pass It On

Anna called the Christian Radio Ministry three times. She introduced six of her friends to the radio station. Now, they’re all asking for their own copy of the New Testament. But Anna wants an extra for her son. “Could you please send me one more New Testament? I’ve read it all and then gave it to my mother, but I would like to give one to my son now as well because he wants to read it too. I’ve been listening to you for years. Your programs are all so nice and your songs are fragrance to the heart.” Anna experiences the fragrance of Christ through the radio programs, the Bible readings, and her own copy of God’s word. She shared with her mother and her friends, and now she wants to share with her son.

A Grandmother Giving Jesus to Her Grandchildren

Stella knows her 90th birthday isn’t far away. She’s been listening to the Christian Radio Ministry for years, and she says, “I enjoy reading the New Testament you gave me, and I’ve read it several times now.” As a grandmother, Stella is grateful for the gospel, but her heart turns toward her grandchildren, prompting another call to the station. “Could you please also send me 3 DVDs of the Jesus film so that I can give them to my grandchildren?”

For the Christian Radio Ministry, it often takes one member of a family to reach many more.

  • A husband to a wife.
  • A daughter to a father.
  • A father to his adult children.
  • A mother to her own mother and her friends and her son.
  • And a grandmother to her grandchildren.

“One generation shall commend your works to another, and shall declare your mighty acts.”

(Psalm 145:4)

The Christian Radio Ministry celebrated its 28th anniversary in 2022. The family members of Theo and Chyrs have helped them faithfully broadcast the gospel in and from Cyprus for many years. They appreciate the prayers of global brothers and sisters in Christ, as they send out the hope of the gospel of faith to families in the region.

  • Pray for Theo and Chrys as they move out of their family home and renovate a smaller, economical apartment.
  • Pray for daughter Anastasia as she produces a worship music program for the station and manages the gift of her own first child.
  • Pray for wisdom, since political upheaval related to the crisis in Ukraine has direct implications on the climate in Cyprus.
  • Praise God for ongoing relationships with programs and organizations like TransWorldRadio, Focus on the Family, and Adventures in Odyssey.
