When Abraham and Deborah first moved to their community, they met with young people in open spaces—in the outdoors. In the strongly Majority region, this put them and their new disciples at risk. The needed a gospel center. Abraham and Deborah stepped out in faith in their gospel destitute city.
Stepping Out in the Darkness
They rented a building in an area surrounded by communities of people the Joshua Project classifies as unreached, even “Frontier”.
As a safe space of refuge, the building provided a chance to freely open the Bible, talk about Jesus, bow in prayer, and sing worship songs. Abraham and Deborah could water seeds sown and cultivate fellowship of new and growing followers of Christ. A local church was formed and flourishing. The rented rooms became an “active center for ministry” and a home for the church.
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16)
Shining Light from the Gospel Center
In the center, the gospel illuminated the whole house and shone into the darkness into surrounding gospel destitute place.
What started with no space—meeting outdoors in exposed areas—grew into a consistent and impactful work. Now, the gospel center hosts:
- Worship gatherings
- Youth discipleship and activities
- Music training
- Women’s meetings
- Health awareness seminars
- Family and community events
- Training and equipping programs
Recently, Abraham and Deborah hosted a 3-day intensive program of learning. Learners began to serve the new fellowship and the surrounding community. The people in this area are from the Majority population. They represent a mixture of unreached peoples, far from and combative towards the gospel. In a dark place with few followers who know that identifying as “Christians” comes with a high price, the small fellowship is a bright light.
The building is no longer just a meeting place. Abraham says, “It’s a strategic community center in a region that deeply needs ongoing presence and care.”
Partnership for the Gospel Center
Leaders from North American churches met Abraham and Deborah and heard how God is moving in this “Frontier” region from the gospel center. Some traveled to see first hand the early life of this new church coming to life. They easily caught the passion of these pioneering national partners. Encouragement, prayer, and assistance started to flow, and God used that to help cover the rent. The sharing of resources means the building might continue to be a safe and free space for the gospel to be proclaimed. With the help of brothers and sisters on the other side of the world, there is a light where once it was simply dark.
