Hope in the Landfill
In one of the largest landfills in the world, stretching over 200 football fields, more than 10,000 families live, raise children, and try to earn a living by picking and selling garbage in hopes of making $3/day or roughly $90/month. In this setting, Live Global’s national partner, Yudi*, has established 10 ministry centers.
Yudi* had the vision to break the cycle of poverty through Christ-centered transformation, and that vision is becoming a reality through these “ten candles of hope.” Yudi* leads more than 40 Bible students to bring the Gospel of Christ through educational development, a food program, and English lessons.
A Community Transformed by Love
The community religion is of another faith and brought much difficulty, hostility, and opposition to Yudi* when he first entered the area in 2012. Yudi* persevered, confident of his calling by the Lord. Through acts of love, care, service, and showing dignity to many, Yudi* and his team have made progress one center at a time.
By the grace and acts of God, neighbors have come to recognize this love and care for their children and families. Being able to host Christmas and Easter events in these other-faith communities is a powerful sign that God is at work through His people.
Raising the Next Generation of Leaders
The Bible students serving in these ten centers are a testimony to God’s work – ten candles of hope. Their maturity and humility at such young ages are remarkable. They are not only serving at the center, teaching, and preparing a small meal for the children, but also growing as disciples of Christ under Yudi’s* guidance. These young believers are stepping forward as the next generation of leaders who will continue to transform their communities for Christ.
